The Empire Hotel Backpackers is a restored Victorian hotel, built in 1867. We are 70 metres from the I Site in the heart of Historic Oamaru. Walk 10 minutes to our famous Little Blue Penguins. Often they walk to us.
From our front door you can stroll along streets of Victorian Buildings to walkways, beautiful Public Gardens, Cheese Factory (with delish Cheese cake), galleries, beaches and much more. We are surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and close to a supermarket.
We are well known for being clean, warm and friendly "Just like home."
The following amenities are FREE:- broadband internet, pool table, off street parking, video library, Dvd, tea and coffee. There are 2 lounges, one with TV and one without, a log fire, heated bedrooms and endless hot water.
Oamaru is situated between Christchurch and Dunedin. People often come across us by accident and find Oamaru to be a real treasure.

5 minutes walk to galleries, shops, historic precinct, museum, beach, 10 minutes walk to blue penguin viewing, coastal walks, Janet Frame trail. Tour to rare yellow-eyed penguins and local sightseeing begins from our door.
30 minutes scenic coastal drive south to Moeraki Boulders. 1 hours drive west to dams and wineries along the Waitaki River.
Golf - 3 golf courses with in 10 minutes drive. Heated swimming pool with spa 5 minutes walk. Museum - 2 minutes walk.
The Empire is surrounded by shops of all kinds.
